Arktotis growing technology and care

arktotis growing technology and care Blog

Arctotis was brought to our country from South Africa. The name of the plant in Latin means “bear’s ear”. Belongs to the family of herbaceous semi-shrub plants.Representatives of this genus have the most diverse color:

  • White;
  • yellow;
  • pink;
  • Orange;
  • scarlet.Arctotis color

In the middle of the flower is an achene with many small seeds. According to external signs, arctotis is similar to a gerbera. Reproduction occurs with the help of seedlings grown from seeds.

Arktotis: growing from seeds, planting and care features

Arctotis seeds

Before planting the seeds, it is necessary to prepare the soil. To do this, you need to mix garden soil with river sand – up to 1/4 of the soil volume and add lime to the soil. Such soil will pass moisture and air well. Ready soil for disinfection is poured with a hot solution of 20% potassium permanganate.

You can also use peat tablets packed in rag bags for these purposes. The composition of these tablets includes:

  • balanced complex of nutrients;
  • growth stimulator;
  • antibacterial agents.

Sowing seeds for seedlings

Seedlings are grown in greenhouses or, in the absence of a greenhouse, wooden boxes are used, in which drainage holes are made to remove excess moisture and allow air to enter. The procedure for sowing seeds for seedlings is performed in the last days of March or early April. Seeds for sowing can be purchased at specialized stores or collected independently. The boxes are filled with soil and seeds are scattered on the surface. Top covered with polyethylene or glass and placed in a well-lit room with a temperature of + 21-25 degrees. The first shoots will appear in 10-12 days. When shoots appear, the polyethylene must be removed.

If the seedlings have three true leaves, the seedlings are planted in separate pots, three pieces each. If the seeds were planted in peat tablets, then they do not need to dive. When transplanting , it must be taken into account that the roots of the plant are long, so the pots for transplantation must be at least 10 cm deep.

When the plant reaches a height of 10 cm, you need to pinch in order to increase bushiness.

Watering at the seedling stage must be approached with extreme caution. Arctotis shoots are very fragile and even spraying with a spray gun can damage immature seedlings. Therefore, to moisten the soil, water is poured into the pan. Dampness for arctotis is contraindicated, since in its natural habitat this plant grows on rocky soil in arid climatic conditions. Excess moisture causes root rot.

Before transplanting into open ground, it is necessary to carry out the hardening procedure within 14 days. To do this, the first two days in a room with seedlings, you need to open a window for two hours. It is necessary to ensure that there are no drafts in the room. The following days, containers with seedlings must be taken out to fresh air every day. You need to start with two hours of being outside, gradually increasing the hours. Before planting, seedlings are left outdoors for a day.

Transplantation in open ground

Transplanting seedlings in open ground should be done at the end of May. A favorable period for planting seedlings according to the lunar calendar is the period from May 16 to 22 and from May 26 to 28. Transplant seedlings should be carefully, as it has a very fragile root system. The pot must be dipped for 2 minutes before entering, the seedlings with a clod of earth are removed and carefully moved into a previously prepared hole.

The transplant site is best chosen in a brightly lit area, away from buildings and large trees. For planting seedlings, any soil is suitable, except for clay. The best soil for arctotis is sandy soil with good air and moisture permeability.

Moderate watering should be carried out after the soil has dried. Thanks to its long roots, the plant is able to extract moisture from the depths of the soil. Too much moisture will cause root rot. After watering, it is necessary to loosen the soil and remove weeds .

Top dressing is carried out before the flowering period. For these purposes, mineral fertilizers are used. It is impossible to feed this type of plants with organic fertilizers!

Sowing seeds in open ground

In the southern regions, gardeners plant plant seeds in open ground. Sowing is carried out in May. Garden soil must be mixed with sand and a small amount of lime added to it. For disinfection, pour a solution of strong potassium permanganate. Seeds are placed in the hole in 3 pieces. The distance between the holes varies depending on the variety from 20 to 40 cm. After the first shoots appear, thinning should be performed, leaving only the strongest, well-developed shoots.

Watering should be done after the soil has dried. Thanks to the long root, the plant extracts moisture from the depths of the soil. The seedlings have enough moisture from the dew that has entered the soil. The soil in the flower bed must be constantly loosened to prevent the formation of a crust on the surface that prevents the penetration of moisture and air to the roots of plants. In the process of loosening, weed grass must be removed from the flower bed.

Top dressing must be done before the flowering period at the time of bud formation. To do this, you can use any complex of mineral fertilizers for flowering crops.

Types of arctotis

The most common types of arctotis are:

  • Stemless – a short variety with a lush dense rosette. Inflorescences orange or red. Towards the middle, the color becomes dark burgundy. The height of the stem with a flower is up to 20 cm.Arctotis
  • Short-stemmed – has a small number of stems, bush height up to 15 cm. Flowers are orange and bright yellow. Middle dark.Arctotis
  • Arctotis luxuriant is a medium height shrub with bright yellow flowers that form lush flower beds. They have decaying stems. Modern hybrid forms originated from this species.Arctotis
  • Rough – in the natural environment it reaches a height of up to 1 meter, but growing in the garden, it has a height of no more than 0.5 meters. White flowers have a stripe of a contrasting color near the core. The core is dark brown. It has a fragile root system, so it does not tolerate transplants well.Arctotis
  • Stehasolisty is the most sought-after species, up to 1 meter high with large leaves drooping down. The flowers are milky white, the heart is purple-gray.Arctotis

Diseases and pests

Arctotis is fairly disease resistant. However, this type of plant suffers from pests such as:

  • aphid ;Aphid
  • meadow tick.meadow mite

To combat these pests, you can use the drug “Tsunami” or an infusion of onion peel. You can prepare the infusion as follows:

  • warm water – 10 liters;
  • onion peel – 200 grams.

Infuse for 5 days. Plants are treated with this solution three times with an interval of five days between treatments.

Arktotis is not picky and easy to care for. Without a doubt, a flower bed with these bright flowers will be a wonderful decoration for your garden.
