Improving soil quality

The quality of the soil on the lands allocated to gardening partnerships in our Non-Black Earth region leaves much to be desired. Often these are loams, too heavy and of little nutrition for plants, or sandy loams, almost sands, on which nothing will grow without the formation of a real fertile layer. Not only do these soils do not contain the nutrients needed by plants, but they are very poor in humus, therefore they are structureless: they either shrink into lumps or crumble into dust.

Everyone knows that it is necessary to properly form the structure of the soil in the country by introducing organic matter. Manure is good for these purposes, especially straw. But after applying manure, we have to fight weeds for years. And the quality of manure is often not what we would like. Sometimes with manure we bring to the garden plot a large amount of harmful substances that the animal’s body got rid of. These are antibiotics, and all kinds of growth bioactivators, and helminth eggs. In the manure there are also deposits of heavy metals that have entered the body of animals with food. Yes, and the manure has become very expensive.

You can replenish organic matter in the soil by constantly sowing part of the garden with green manure, that is, herbs that we will not remove, but will dig into the soil for rotting.

And you can also improve the quality of the soil in the country by constantly replenishing it with compost or humus, prepared right there, in the garden, from garden waste, since every gardener can make compost.

Composting methods

There are many answers to the question of how to make compost or humus with your own hands: it is known to prepare compost underground and on the ground, in pits, in containers, in barrels, in bags, in fourteen months or two weeks. But they all come down to a few basic requirements. In order for the pile to warm up well and composting to proceed quickly, it needs nitrogen, carbon dioxide, air, moisture, bacteria, heat, it must be of sufficient size and contain a lot of organic matter.

Here is one of the easiest composting options.

First you need to make a compost bin with sides 1 meter and in height 120 cm, which would be nice to raise 10-15 centimeters above the ground for better air circulation. You can make it with your own hands. The compost bin should not be placed under the canopy of trees, as the liquid flowing out of it can be poisonous to the roots. Dump all plant debris, food waste, foliage, shavings, wood chips, and all rotting garbage into this box all summer. The smaller the particles, the faster they will overheat and the better the compost will turn out.

The main reason for making compost is a lack of nitrogen and poor heap heating. Nitrogen is given by the green parts of plants or hay, manure, bird droppings. If these components are few, it is possible through each layer in 20-30 cmscatter 30 grams of ammonium nitrate or urea over the surface.30 cm. To increase the amount of carbon dioxide, it is good to add a 3-5 cm layer of sawdust from time to time. The addition of ash will improve the quality of the compost.

How to make compost in winter?

In the cold season, it is difficult to get the compost heap to start working. For faster heating, you can pour a bucket of boiling water into its middle. The lack of moisture slows down the process of decomposition, and its excess displaces air and washes away useful substances.

Properly turn over after 3-4 days, while the decomposition process will accelerate so much that the compost will be ready within a month. If you find time to flip the heap, try to send the components that are in the outer layers to the inside of the heap. Or you can just once or twice a week, pierce a bunch of peg in several places, turn it a little.
