Why are ants dangerous in the beds?

why are ants dangerous in the beds Blog

Probably, many summer residents have encountered the problem of ants in the garden and in the garden. In general, they are friendly to humans, and also exterminate pests well and improve soil structure. Therefore, some summer residents are sometimes even especially happy about the appearance of anthills, they watch them so that the nests do not disappear. But there are times when ants turn from friends into enemies that harm all the plants in the garden.

What ants are bred in the beds

There are more than 14 thousand varieties of such insects in the world. But in our regions there are a maximum of 300 species. Beginning gardeners and gardeners do not need to understand all types of ants, since only 3 types of insects most often live in the beds:

  1. Yellow. Reach small sizes up to 5 mm maximum. The bodies of such individuals have a reddish-red tint. They feed on aphids.
  2. From two colors. These are red forest ants, they reach the largest sizes – up to 14 mm. They have a reddish-brown breast, black belly and head.
  3. Black. The second name is lisius. These are the most common ants living in the garden, almost every summer resident is familiar with them.

Wood ants are considered welcome guests at plantings as they provide crop protection from pests. But black and red ants entail only unpleasant consequences, their massive nests not only spoil the aesthetic appearance of the site, but also cause significant harm to plants. Therefore, as soon as you see large colonies of ants on your beds, it is urgent to start exterminating them.

What are the benefits and harms of anthills

Often summer residents cannot decide whether it is necessary to deal with ants or not. You can answer this question only by understanding the harm and benefit that insects bring to a summer cottage.

What are the benefits of ants in the garden

Ants in summer cottages should cause joy, if only because it means that the garden has fertile land. Such insects are very hardworking, they live only on well-heated and healthy soil, in which there is a lot of air and nutrients. If, on the contrary, all the ants abruptly fled from your site, then you need to think about whether it is worth planting fertile crops in this area.

The work of ants greatly facilitates many gardening jobs. Insects from one anthill are able to fight various pests , such as caterpillars and larvae. They destroy about 5 million of these parasites during the summer. From this point of view, ants are even more efficient than birds.

Also, thanks to the anthills, aeration of the fertile soil layer occurs. Since the places where insects live are a kind of impressive system of a large number of underground burrows and passages, when creating them, insects guarantee the natural ventilation of the soil, and also saturate it with oxygen.

It should also be remembered that ants significantly increase the level of fertility in the area. In the place where the ant garden is located, there is an excessive accumulation of organic matter, so the plants that live here will develop 2 times faster. Also, with the help of insects, sanitary cleaning of the beds is carried out. Since insects collect needles, branches, particles of grass and trees from adjacent territories, ants, even without knowing it, significantly clear the garden and garden of garbage. Surprisingly, in some states, the labor of ants is even exploited in order to harvest whole seeds. And their larvae are eaten and used to prepare various medicines.

What is the danger of an ant attack

If there is a small number of anthills in the summer cottage, then this will only benefit garden crops. But as soon as favorable conditions are provided to insects, they will multiply to uncontrollable sizes. This is not surprising, because one female is able to lay up to 25 eggs per day, and her life expectancy is 25 years. Ordinary worker ants live in the world for about two and a half years. If you do not take timely measures to prevent the development of ants, then you may encounter various troubles that arise against the background of insect activity.

Possible problems that arise due to ants include the fact that they dig tunnels deep and wide, and insects begin to gnaw at the roots of crops that interfere with this process. This causes the plants to weaken and die. Also, as a result of the activity of ants, an increase in the level of soil acidity occurs. In the process of life and even after death, the insect is able to release acid, which leads to an increase in the pH level in the soil.

This is detrimental to plants that prefer an alkaline or neutral environment. Often, insects lead to the death of young seedlings. When their number increases, the damage they cause to the crop becomes noticeable. Ants are even capable of causing detrimental effects directly to summer residents, because when it comes time for gardening and gardening procedures, ants can sting people, causing redness and itching at the bite sites.

Very often, ants come into a fight with wasps, which negatively affects the state of fruit crops. Quite often, due to the impact of ants, weed reproduction occurs . Insects drag a large number of seeds every day, as a result of which the planting material falls into the ground and germinates. And if in the garden such an influence is hardly noticeable, then on clean and well-groomed beds this can become a real problem.

But the biggest crime of insects against summer residents is the ability to “household”. An ant colony can create several herds of aphids , which they feed on. Insects take care of her, carry her and protect her from enemies. As a result of this, pests increase their numbers, which destroys all crops and plantings that are within a radius of 4 meters.

The use of folk methods for insect control

Many gardeners, in search of the most effective means to fight ants, consider folk methods. Such products are popular because they are harmless to plantings and human health, but at the same time they are able to eliminate insects. The most common technique is the use of aromatic attacks. This method is more loyal, because it does not kill insects, but forces them to equip their home in another place. Also, this method is environmentally friendly and efficient.

To carry out an attack against ants, various plants with a pungent odor are used. Most often used:

  • tansy;
  • sagebrush;
  • mustard;
  • anise;
  • garlic;
  • onion.

It is necessary to use only fresh stems with a pungent odor. They can simply be scattered around the anthill or tied to tree trunks that are located next to the dwellings of insects.

You can both decorate the site and expel pests from it. To do this, it is necessary to plant a large number of marigolds, valerian and mint near the places where the ants are located. If you want to protect some specific plants in your area from the attack of ants, you need to treat them with decoctions and infusions of hot pepper, tobacco or onion peel. All these funds are prepared at the rate of 200 g of raw materials per 500 ml of water. The resulting preparation is required to spray the plantings.

Other popular methods are also very common:

  1. Boric acid. With such a tool, it is necessary to fill up the nests of ants or prepare baits based on it. To build a trap, you need to mix boron with a sweet syrup made from sugar and water. The dosage should be about 5 g per 150 ml.
  2. Red ground pepper and dry mustard. Such seasonings must be mixed in equal proportions, and then evenly fill the space between the rows of plants that have come under attack by ants. The stripes should be solid, their width is about 6-7 cm. Mustard and pepper can effectively repel insects with their pungent odor, both in tandem and separately.
  3. Baking soda. With such a product, it is necessary to carefully cover the entire anthill. Particular attention should be paid to the inlets. Insects die just instantly only on contact with the powder. The advantage of the method is that soda will not harm the soil. Soda is also often mixed with dry mustard and used in a similar way.
  4. Boiling water. This is probably the most well-known method, since it was used many years ago. Boiling water must be poured directly into the anthill, only very carefully so as not to harm the plants that grow nearby. This method is effective, but it will not work if the insect nest is located near the roots of shrubs or trees.
  5. Burnout. Manipulations are applied only when the plants are no longer in the garden. It is necessary to tear open the upper part of the nest so that the internal passages are visible. Then you need to fill the area with gasoline or kerosene, and then set fire to the anthill. A prerequisite for such a manipulation is that it should be done only in the evening, so that all the inhabitants are in their nest. Otherwise, there will be no result from the method. In the summer, you can replace the burning method with ordinary ash, scattering it over the anthill.
  6. Sunflower oil. The product requires abundant watering of nests, as well as paths that are used by pests to move. Once the insects are in the oil, they cannot get rid of it. This will cause the insects to be unable to breathe and die.

Quite often, yeast is used in the fight against such pests. They need to be poured in a dry form into an anthill, and then poured with sugar syrup. The effectiveness of the method lies in the fact that the yeast bacteria begin to instantly activate and “attack” the reserves that the ants left in their underground burrows. Since the pests collect exclusively sweet organic matter, the bacteria will begin to destroy insect warehouses, which will lead to the fact that they will have to leave their nests and look for a more suitable place to live. In the fight against such parasites, water and kerosene are often used. The components must be mixed in equal proportions, and then pour it into the anthill. To do this, you need to stir up the nest so that the liquid gets directly into the internal nests where the larvae and the “queen” live.

To eliminate ants in a summer cottage, mixtures of vinegar, shampoo, water and sunflower oil are often used. But this method is only suitable if the anthills are not located where the beds are. You need to take a bucket with a capacity of 10 liters, fill it with water, and then add a bottle of vinegar, 500 ml of vegetable oil and a package of any shampoo (even the cheapest one). All components must be thoroughly mixed, and then poured into ant holes.

Lures and traps

For more loyal summer residents, options with insect traps are offered. You need to take 8 tsp. minced meat and 1/2 tsp. Boers. The components need to be rolled into balls, and then scattered next to the anthill. Insects will stick to the bait and die.

You can also make a trap of dry yeast (3-4 tablespoons) and any jam (4 teaspoons). The components are mixed with water, brought to the consistency of sour cream. Then the mixture is applied to pieces of cardboard and left in the required areas.

Professional preparations for elimination with insects

Another method of extermination of insects is the use of chemical treatment. To do this, there are a large number of special preparations, the action of which is aimed at the total extermination of larvae and adults. The drug “Great Warrior” is very popular, based on diazinon and clopirifos. The drug does not act immediately, but after a certain period. During this time, the insect still has time to return to the anthill and infect the rest, including the “queen”.

Another common remedy based on diazmnon is “Muracid”. This is a very economical option, since 1 ml of the drug is enough to exterminate 15-25 anthills. The effect of the drug persists for 60-90 days. No less popular among gardeners is Phenaksin powder, which is based on boric acid. Its purpose is to spray along ant trails and treat plants. Such a procedure should be carried out using a special spray gun every day until the insects are exterminated.

You can also use Aktara granules or concentrate. It is a universal insecticide that is highly effective when applied to the soil. It can be used to spray plants that have been attacked by ants. There is a stronger chemical, it is practiced in the extermination of a large number of insects. Its name is “Anteater”. The product is available in ampoules that dissolve with water, one ampoule is needed for 10 liters.

Preventive Measures and Tips for Eliminating Ants

Before using chemicals to exterminate ants, you must carefully read the instructions and follow their instructions. It is impossible to uncontrollably change the concentration of the drug and the conditions for the treatment of areas. Since this can lead to the fact that the ants develop resistance to solutions, and it will be much more difficult to eliminate them.

The emergence of ants is easier to prevent than to eliminate insects. Among the preventive measures, spraying of trees and shrubs from aphids, before the onset of buds, is distinguished. This is necessary so that such pests do not cause the development of ants that feed on them. If aphids are found on your site, they must be destroyed immediately. You should carefully dig the soil, paying special attention to those areas where the anthill is possibly located. It is also required to keep the garden clean, remove food debris, as they attract insects.

If you have a huge number of ants, you should immediately contact a special sanitary service, which will carry out a safe treatment from insects and will not harm your health and future harvest. It is necessary to approach the extermination of ants in a complex way, using both folk methods and purchased drugs.
